A Critique of William Bennett’s “Against Gay Marriage” The issue of homosexuals in our society is becoming more of a debate. The debate is no longer whether we should accept them, but rather, should they be legally recognized. Gay marriage should not be legalized because of its effect it would have on society. William Bennett’s article “Against Gay Marriage” was originally published in the Washington Post and highlights the negative effects of gay marriage on our society. Bennett wrongfully believes that homosexual and heterosexual unions are not comparable; however, if we change the definition of marriage, our society’s understanding of marriage would be irreconcilably ruined.
Biological Approach | PY1 PY1 | Model answers for biological approach | Sumi Prasobh AS Level | 1a) Outline two assumptions of the biological approach (4 marks) One assumption of the biological approach is that our personalities and behaviors are biologically determined. Lab research found that we’re a product of our brain structure. The balance of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and adrenaline has directly been found to affect our mood, thoughts and personalities. For example Hans Selye found that both humans and animals are biologically determined to react in the same predictable way to the threat of a stressor for aiding survival. Another assumption is that certain regions of the brain determine certain behaviors.
Prudence helps the individual in making informed choices that will benefit him and the society at large. Yet, this same upbringing blinded me to the inherent social disadvantage experienced by transsexuals. Through my experience, I can recognize that heterosexuals are taught not to identify the privilege of their group over transsexuals. I have decided to identify some of the daily effects of heterosexual privilege in my life. I have chosen those conditions that I think in my case attach somewhat more to sexuality privilege than to class, color, or status, though of course all these other factors are intricately intertwined. As far as I can tell, transsexuals that I come into contact cannot count on most of these conditions.
Topic: Minimal rationality In his essay “Minimal Rationality” Dretske explains what minimal rationality is and what is needed to posses it. In the following I will summarize the main points about minimal rationality and oppose it to biological rationality. By minimal rationality Dretske means that not only the behaviour needs to be under the causal control of thoughts but it also needs to be explained (governed) by the content of the thoughts. The explanation by the content of thoughts is what distinguishes minimal rationality from rationality. Dretske also uses the term of biological rationality that describes the behaviour designed by natural selection to achieve a consistent goal of higher fitness.
Homosexuality A homosexual is a person who has sexual relations with another person of the same sex; a man having sex with another man or a woman having sex with another woman. The practice of homosexuality has received and increased interest throughout the United States within the last several years. The practice of homosexuality being moral or immoral, acceptable or unacceptable is becoming more of an issue each day. The act of homosexuality is immoral for many of reasons. Homosexuality is unnatural because it disregards the natural use of sex organs of men and women.
So if you are saying that gay marriage should not be allowed to marry based on moral issues, you are in essence saying that morally it is worse to be a homosexual than to be a rapist, murderer, or child molester. It is this kind of thinking that has held society back. Still others would argue that due to divorce and cohabitation the institution of marriage is already in a weakened state. They view allowing legal gay marriage as the potential straw that is going to break marriages back. I would acknowledge marriage does not have the same prevalence and level of commitment it held in past generations but the decline of marriage has nothing to do with homosexuals.
The issue of same-sex marriage has been debated for a very long time. Whether we will ever reach a middle ground in which both sides can live happily is uncertain. The arguments against same-sex marriage can be seen as unreasonable and bias since much of it is not entirely true. A major argument for the opposition of same-sex marriage is that homosexual marriage negatively affects children and result in many issues children of heterosexual parents do not usually experience. Toni Meyer and Jocelyn Floyd both argue against same-sex marriage relying heavily on the fact that it will harm children today, but does same-sex marriage actually impact our society and more importantly children by doing more harm than good?
Abraham Maslow Summary Abraham Maslow is considered to be the pioneer of the humanism paradigm in psychology. He is best known for creating his notion of hierarchy of needs and self- actualisation and focused on the subjective reality to be the primary guide for human behaviour (Henley, Hergenhahn, 2009). He believed studying individuals is more informative than a group of individual who shares personal traits or social situation in common; therefore he focused studying individuals rather than a collective of individuals (Henley et al, 2009). Furthermore, he emphasised self-discovery that helps to enrich human’s life. Overall, the goal of humanism is to understand the description of human being.
