Why might the biological approach to personality be controversial for some people? Explain your reasoning. Human biology isn’t easily changed. If we believe that everything is biological then we are telling ourselves that we cannot make our own decisions. For example, homosexuality many people believe that being a homosexual is wrong but that is the way that a lot of people were brought up to believe. I myself have family members and friends that are homosexual although, I was taught it was wrong to be with the same sex as you are. I believe that it doesn’t matter if someone is gay therefore, I have my own opinion. Another example, people assume that people are born to be criminals. They will also look for someone who is reliable, honest, hardworking, dependable, and have the skills to do the job they were hired to do. For example, if an employer hires someone who has a record of always being on time, being dependable, honest, and trustworthy then the employer knows that the person has a good personality and they are not lazy. However, if the same employer is looking for someone and they notice the opposite of the other person then this is telling them that they cannot be relied upon to do a job therefore, they are lazy. By comparing the two people this will tell the employer what type of personality they have either good or bad. Strengths – both acknowledge that they are not the only approach to personality. Other results help with your personality for example, the environment you were brought up in. White (2012) Weaknesses – “With the humanistic theory, you are in control of your personality on a conscious level and with the biological theory; your genetics controls your personality. With the biological theory your personality is set at birth while the humanistic theory you are solely responsible for your personality.” Swan
