Sir Edmund Hillary Sir Edmund Hillary was born in Auckland, New Zealand on July 20th 1919. His mother was Gertrude Hillary and his father was Augustus Hillary. Hillary’s family later moved to a place called Tuakau which is a little south of Auckland in 1920. He went to a Tuakau primary school and later went to Auckland grammar school. He gained an interest in climbing after his school took a field trip to mount Huapehu. He studied at the University of Auckland after high school and in 1939 he completed his first major climb at the summit of mount Ollivier. On January 11th 2008 Sir Edmund Hillary died of heart failure at the age of 88. Jon Krakauer was born in 1954 and grew up in Corvallis, Oregon. His father introduced him to mountaineering when he was 8 years old. He went to Hampshire College in 1976. Krakauer worked mainly as a carpenter and commercial salmon fisherman. He lived in Colorado, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest. In May 1996 he reached the top of Mt. Everest, but on the climb down a storm took the lives of four of his five teammates. He wrote a book about the experience that he called “Into Thin Air”, which became a bestseller. Tenzing Norgay was alegedly born on May 15, 1914 he was born in Thamey, Nepal. He was a Buddhist, which is the traditional religion of the Sherpas and Tibetans. He was originally called Namgyal Wangdi but as a child his name was changed because of the advice of the head lama. His Father was a Yak herder named Ghang La Mingma and his mother was named Dokmo Kinzom. He started his climbing attempts in the 1930’s.
