Set in 1984,the story takes place in Durham, North England-where the coal miners are on strike and the day always begins with noises from the police trying to put down potential riots.Billy Elliot’s (Jamie Bell) life is turned upside down as two other family members are involved in that aggressive strike.Billy’s mother has passed away.He is left living with his anguished father Jackie(Gary Lewis)-brother Tony(Jamie Draven) and taking care of his senile grandmom.Life has made Billy a sensitive and mature boy.He is forced by his father to study boxing to make him into his own image.However,boxing seem not to be his forte but some elegant ballet dance moves really do.With encouragement from Mrs Wilkinson (Julie Walters)-a jaded ballet teacher,he joins in the class and show his raw talent at dance.Unfortunately,his father and brother consider Billy’s passion as effeminate and donot approve it at all.The movie comes to crunch-time when he chooses to prove to his prejudiced father how he has been enthralled in ballet and has a strong desire to follow his own way. It is such a touching moment when the father is moved to tears looking at his son and realizes how preconceptions have clouded his judgement.
