He was born on the 28th October, 1955 in Seattle, Washington into a family with a rich history of high achievers in fields ranging from business, politics, and community services (Bellis n.d.). His great-grandfather was a state-legislator and mayor, his grandfather was the vice president of a major bank, and his father was a renowned lawyer. During his early years, there were signs that he inherited the drive, intelligence and competitive spirits from his family. In elementary school, Gates surpassed the capabilities of his classmates; hence his parents enrolled him in Lakeside School for Boys which is a private school famous for its intense academic environment. It was at this school where his interest for computers and software design flourished (Jay 2004). In 1975, Bill Gates and his childhood friend Paul Allen decided to utilise their skills to develop software for the newly emerging personal computer market. They saw an opportunity to improve the capabilities and functions for the current computer systems so they produced a vital program (Microsoft News Centre 2012) which became the catalyst for them to embark on a business venture. This venture gave birth to Microsoft, which today has become a multinational corporation and a market leader in the computer software industry.
