Foreign and Primary Language The article of interest, “How Bilingual is Bilingual? Mother-tongue Proficiency and Learning through a Second Language” is to encourage parents and teachers to work together in ensuring that the child learns both their mother-tongue and their second language. Yacizi et al believe that you cannot be proficient in your second language until you are proficient in your mother-tongue. Additionally Yazici et al suggest that being proficient in both will have a positive effect on education and acculturation, but on the other hand if the child is not proficient in their mother-tongue then they will experience difficulties not only at home with their parents, but will also experience difficulties at school with their peers and teachers. “How Bilingual is Bilingual? Mother-tongue Proficiency and Learning through a Second Language” seems to have an authoritative tone, Ethos, because Yacizi et al are faculty at Akdeniz University, in Antalya, Turkey, where Zeliha Yacizi holds a PhD in early childhood education and is the head of the early childhood education department at Akdeniz University. Furthermore, Yacizi et al are published in the International Journal of Early Years Education which has a solid reputation and was reviewed a few times. In contrast to the authority present in this work there is very little Pathos to be found; however Logos occurs in practically every paragraph. For example, Yazici et al conclude, “Yazici (1999) found a positive relationship between mother-tongue competence and reading-readiness. Her research found that five—six-year-old Turkish children in Germany and Turkey who scored higher in a test of the mother tongue also had a higher level of reading-readiness” (Yazici et al 261). In this example Yacizi et al have cited their source, and this exists as both an ethos and logos example. It is a logos example
