Taylor Ladson January 15, 2012 English IV: Speech What makes a superstar? Is it looks? Talent? Class? How about all of these? I am sure that all of you have heard of Beyonce; she is a singer, songwriter, actress, producer, philanthropist, and a worldwide superstar. She has sold over 75 million records worldwide from her four solo albums, which makes her one of the best selling music artists of all time. In this speech I will discuss her road to stardom. Beyonce Giselle Knowles was born on September 4, 1981 in Houston, Texas. She started out singing in her church youth choir where she would drown out all of the noise every Sunday. Her father enrolled her in many performing arts schools where she competed in singing and dancing competitions. Her father helped set up and manage a girl’s R&B group called, Gyrls Tyme, later changed to Destiny’s Child, from family friends. Whitney Houston discovered them and helped bring them to fame. In 1997, Destiny’s Child released their first single called No, No, No which went multi-platinum. In 1999, they released an album called The Writing on The Wall, which sold 9 million units worldwide and had three top ten hits in one year, becoming one of the best selling female groups of all time. In 2001, two of the members left the group because of personal conflicts, leaving behind Beyonce and Kelly Rowland. In that same year they were nominated for five Grammy Awards. The other two were quickly replaced by Michelle Williams, and at the Grammy’s, the trio won two awards. In 2002, the group broke up to try solo careers and to no surprise, Beyonce had the most success. In 2004, the group reunited to put out a final album, called Destiny Fulfilled, which sold 500,000 copies in the first week.
