Many teenage mothers find strength in their motherhood role but this does not come without cost to themselves or their children, as many teenagers are considered unsuitable to be parents and do not have the right support (B.). For this paper I have conducted two interviews and I have also done research on why it is harder to be a single mother as a teenager. Due to the financial, emotional and physical struggles that teenage single mother have, it is more difficult for them to raise children than single mothers who are older. According to familyfirstaid.org , the United States has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the “western industrialized world” (Teen Pregnancy Stats).
One-third of young US girls, about 820,000, become pregnant before they turn 20 (80% are unmarried) and 4 million American teens contract an STD each year. (Teen Sex- Do Abstinence Only Programs Discourage Teen Sex? Web) With these statistics, it is apparent that teens are not making wise decisions regarding their own health and well-being. Nothing is more serious and personal than your health, and teens don’t seem to be able to grasp the gravity of the situation. Teens are bombarded with sex education, and yet have the highest STD rates in the country.
Intro: (1).Today, in every state teenagers that are sexually active can get contraceptives to protect themselves against unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. (2) Most teens use protection also called contraceptives even if they can't talk about sex with their parents. But some states want to take away teens' ability to protect themselves. They want to prevent sexually active teenagers from getting birth control unless they first tell their parents. (3) Some people say that allowing teenagers to get contraceptives without first telling a parent encourages them to become sexually active and that requiring teenagers to tell their parents before they get birth control would stop sexual activity but research says teenagers don’t become sexually active if they can obtain contraceptives.
Vulnerable mothers that do not finish getting their education become discouraged and loose the motivation and drive to tackle the oncoming challenges that life brings, creating for them another barrier on the micro level; it being a financial barrier. “Poverty and economic loss diminish the capacity for supportive, consistent, and involved parenting and render parents more vulnerable to the debilitating effects of negative life events” (Vonnie C. McLoyd, 1990 p.311). Not being financially stable brings on a lot of stress that impacts the relationship between the mother and child. Education has a large impact on a person’s life and it can change it for the better.
Thirty percent of teenage girls who have dropped out of school listed pregnancy or parenthood as the primary reason (“Teen Pregnancy Prevention”, n.d.). That percentage does not seem as high as some people think, but what kind of jobs can these females hold without a diploma or GED? Only 40 percent of teen moms finish high school (“Teen Pregnancy Prevention,” n.d.). It is understandable on why these girls do not finish high school, but it is extremely crucial that they
For Teenagers who fall pregnant, it is difficult to juggle the insecurities of teenage hood with learning basic parenting skills. As a result, teenage parents often consider abortion. Statistics show that New Zealand has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the world, with around fifty girls in every thousand falling pregnant. Of these pregnancies, about half result in abortion. An advantage of putting a parenting licence in place will be to educate these teenagers on basic parenting skills to qualify them to raise a child, avoiding such abortions.
It is important for people in a relationship to understand that being in a relationship with another person does not give anyone the right to force the other to do anything they do not feel comfortable doing. A survey was taking on sexual abuse and sadly, 1 in 4 revealed they’d been pressured to perform oral sex or engage in intercourse (Anonymous Daughters, 2006) and half of teen girls who had experienced some sort of pressure to do a sexual act said that they were “afraid the relationship would end if they did not give in” (Stay teen,
If your child wants to protect themselves whether it’s from getting pregnant or whatever it may be, why stop them. They are being responsible for their own actions and body. In conclusion, if a teen feels mature enough about making the decision to have sex they should be mature enough to be safe and responsible about it. Teens don’t feel comfortable asking their parents for these types of things so I think it’s good for birth control to be accessed without parent consent. It won’t only help to protect the teens, but it will help other heath issues to.
Approximately 62 million women are with their child-bearing years in the United States. Ten percent of who are under nineteen. Meanwhile only six percent of women, whom are on any form of birth control, get pregnant while on a contraceptive. With the numerous amounts of teens openly having sex, birth control should be much needed. The rate of teen pregnancy is high, as you can see in mainstream America.
Some 70 percent of all women in China use contraception. Puberty tends to start earlier as countries develop and children’s diets improve; in China the starting age has fallen from 14 ½ to 12 ½. Meanwhile the average age of marriage has edged up, from 20 to 22, extending to the time that many young people can be sexually active but unmarried. The abortions rate among young, single women is rising. It is a moral outrage to have a child before marriage than it is to have the shame associated with an abortion.
