I zipped up my brown, leather jacket as I picked up my pace from fast walking to a jog. I knew I was being chased.
Dang it, Lily! Did you really have to ditch me at this time of night? It’s flipping 11:30! I thought to myself. My feet moved rapidly upon the forest floor as I ran through the trees. I could hear the footsteps behind me. The sound of my heartbeat filled my ears. I didn’t know if I could continue. I was never the best athlete in gym class. But this was between life and death. I didn’t care about where I was going, I just had to escape.
Just moments ago, I, Melanie Carson, was at the movies with my friend, Lily, just like a normal 16 year old on a Friday night. Lily was new at our school, and I really wanted to get to know her better. We watched 3 different movies, the last one being “Happy Feet 2”. We were about to leave, when I really had to go to the bathroom. I told Lily I’d be right back and I rushed to the bathroom as if my life depended on it. When I came out, I searched the whole theatre for Lily but I couldn’t find her anywhere. I even checked my cell phone, but there were no texts or missed calls. This wasn’t good.
The city’s crime rate had increased in the last week by a lot. A serial killer had been on the loose in Toronto and my parent had told me not be out by myself at night because it wasn’t safe. I had been watching the news everyday for the last week and each day, there was a report of a new murder. I never was really interested in listening to the news until one day, while I was fixing myself a sandwich; I faintly listened to the reporter while my dad watched the news.
“Good evening, my name is Linda Taylor, here live at Danforth C.I. located in 800 Greenwood Ave. Today, at 4:30, a body of a young 16 year old girl was found behind a bench in the school’s front yard. Detectives have discovered that the body belongs to Lauren Rivers, a student that attended Danforth C.I.” The reporter explained.
