Harrison Bergeron Summary Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. begins in the year 2081 where everything and everyone was finally equal. No one was smarter, better looking, stronger or quicker than anyone else. Although everyone was equal there were still some discrepancies. George and Hazel Bergeron’s fourteen-year-old son was taken away. Hazel was intelligent but not too intelligent but she could only think in short bursts. George’s intelligence was above average so the government placed a radio in his ear that transmitted a sound every twenty seconds so he was unable to take advantage of his brain. George carries a forty-seven pound canvas bag filled with birdshot padlocked around his neck. If he removes it he will go to jail. There was a news bulletin on the television given by a ballerina with a hideous mask meaning she was probably beautiful, she broadcasted that their son Harrison escaped from jail and had a plan to overthrow the government. Suddenly there was a noise of a door being broken from its hinges Harrison stood in the middle of the television studio making everyone scared for their lives. He claimed that he was the emperor and ripped off all of his handicaps. Then, he asked for an empress to come up to claim her mate and throne. Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General entered and killed the Emperor and Empress with a shotgun. George noticed that Hazel had been crying but she could not remember why, just that it was on the
