Carmen Delgado Rodriguez Professor Santilli ISAC 101 12 October 2014 The Berbers The Berbers are one of the ancient ancestors to the Moors and this is why we decided to research them. I found interesting that the Berbers still exist today and still hold many of their customs. I chose to research the customs that the Berbers had. These are customs dealing with wth medicine, marriage, birth, and death. My classmates covered the environment in which the Berbers lived, their religion, political structure, technology and origins. Rituals: The customs of the Berbers were very interesting. Birth is a custom that is purely reserved for women. Men can not be involved at all. It was not decided by a man and a women. In fact men do not have a say in who they marry. Relationships were not how they are now. People were married at a very young age, there was really not adolescence. Marriage marked the end of childhood. Mother pick the bride for her son and the son and future daughter in law is usually left out of it. There is not courting or even getting to know your future partner. The pairing of couples was made with the whole communities best interest in mind. Men do bless the marriage but it was basically just for appearances, they do not have a real say in the pairings, although the sister and aunts of the male do have a say in the pairing. Weddings are not a private event in many tribes of the Berbers. Weddings are very in sync with nature so they are not meant to interrupt any of natures natural processes. So weddings to not happen in the summer in order to not disturb the fertile soil. Weddings happen usually in October. Although there is certain tribes of the Berbers that changed their tradition along the way. There is a three day event in which young people meet someone they get engaged and married to. The reason for this event is that there was two young people from rival tribes that were not allowed to marry so they committed suicide. In the Berber culture most women wear elaborate jewelry on their heads, around their necks, on their ears and fingers. They wear a head covering which many geometric or organic designs. All of the things that they wear have been crafted by their village women. It is also important to note the make up that they wear. They mark their eyebrows with black charcoal and line around their eyes with the same. They wear red rouge on their cheeks, and in some tribes women have chin tattoos that they get once they enter
