In the novel, Beowulf, the main character is the epitome of an epic hero. He has great strength, he is morally sound, and, for the most part, he thinks of others before he thinks of himself. Beowulf comes to the Geats’ aid when an evil monster named Grendel terrorizes their mead hall. He courageously defeats the monster and defeats the monster’s vengeful mother. Through these battles, Beowulf’s strength, humbleness and courageousness is revealed.
Beowulf has come to Hrothgar’s kingdom to kill Grendel, who has been haunting the kingdom and no warrior could defeat him. Beowulf is a hero in the eyes of his fellow men through his amazing physical strength. He fought in numerous battles and returned victorious from all. Beowulf’s battle with Grendel was a great one, he fought Grendel with nothing but his bare hands and emerged victorious by ripping off Grendel’s arm, “so hard, they all said, that not even the sharpest of swords could have cut it through, broken it off the monster’s arm and ended its life, as Beowulf had done armed with only his bare hands.” Beowulf’s strength is a key part to is heroism; After Beowulf killed Grendel he went to battle his mother because she was seeking revenge for her son’s death. Beowulf succeeds in slaying Grendel’s mother by chopping off her head, he then carries her head back with ease while it takes four regular men to lift her head.
Wiglaf knows of the many triumphs Beowulf endeavors, and sees it as an encouragement. If Beowulf was able to defeat, why couldn't Wiglaf. Wiglaf is extremely brave to continue the fight Beowulf had started and kill the dragon as his loyalty shines through. Beowulf and Wiglaf are genuinely loyal characters in the epic poem. The two inferior men endeavored many hardships throughout because of their loyalty to others.
Beowulf shows bravery in line 158 “… Death was errand.” He states that he will fight to his death. He will not back up from his fight with Grendel even if it might cost him his life. Beowulf also shows courage in line 154 “… I drove five great giants into chains.” By Beowulf’s statement he shows how he is not afraid of fighting anyone. Beowulf shows courage which makes him fit the image of an epic hero. Beowulf is also considered to be a leader.

A hero in a quest to fight for glory and the greater good of society.

This epic poem illustrates the journey and hardship of one Anglo-Saxon warrior named Beowulf, who because of his journey became known as one of the respected heroes of the Anglo-Saxon times. Throughout his journey, Beowulf stumbled upon endless battles with ferocious monster trying to terrorize his king and kingdom. Beowulf was one to never give up on anything or anyone no matter the circumstances. Beowulf is an authentic hero according to the code of Anglo-Saxon times because he is courageous, loyal, and determined.
An epic hero is a brave and noble character from an epic poem. Beowulf is exactly that. Beowulf demonstrates most of those traits. Beowulf demonstrates an epic hero because he was charged with a quest, he had super strength, and traveled underwater to a supernatural world. These are just some of the values shared by the epic hero Beowulf.
Beowulf the Hero A hero is someone who goes out of his way to do the right thing no matter what. In the epic, “Beowulf,” many things make the era in which our hero lives a dark and dangerous one. Monsters like Grendel and his mother terrorize people for no reason, and a huge dragon razes villages by breathing fire and hordes enormous amounts of treasure. When each of these dark beings arises, Beowulf shows the fortitude to challenge them with all his might and fury. These events show us that Beowulf is an epic hero because he possesses strength greater than anyone else in the world, he accomplishes great feats, impossible for anyone lesser, and his actions echo values of a good and strong leader.
In the fight with Grendel’s mother it says,“No Geat could have stopped her”(pg.51 ln.417) this quote show how Beowulf exemplifies superhuman traits ,because no other geat could fight Grendel's mother or stop her but Beowulf was willing to help and fought her by himself and won.”Then she carried him, armor and sword and all to her home”(pg.54 ln.462,463)this quote shows how big and strong the monster was but Beowulf was still able to come over that obstacle and defeat her. Beowulf being able to stop Grendel’s mother with all the force she had behind her shows that Beowulf possessed some form of superhero traits within him to draw from to defeat
