Sam Smith September 11, 2009 Duvall Honors English IV Beowulf the Superhero Beowulf being one of the first pieces of literature known to man during the middle ages demonstrates a character that shows the characteristics of a hero. Beowulf exemplifies the archetypal epic hero in four ways. His characteristics show that he is courageous, brave, has superior or super human strength and also has the ability to boast his accomplishments. Courage is the most evident through out Beowulf. Beowulf does now back down from any challenge that stands in his way whether it be the dragon, Grendel or Grendel’s Mother. Courage gave Beowulf a lot of the strength he had. Beowulf was the first literary superhero known to man. Like the common day super hero Beowulf had ordinary human characteristics, and superhuman powers. Beowulf possessed extreme amounts of physical power. Beowulf defeated Grendel who was feared by all men because he ate humans and attacked them in their sleep. Beowulf hung Grendel’s arm, claw and shoulders from the rafters of the meeting hall. Beowulf had the ability to boast his accomplishments. Beowulf possesses the qualities of the desire to help others. Beowulf shows how he has the quality of a hero in his boasting to Hrothgar. When Beowulf first meets Hrothgar he tells him how his youth has been filled with glory and his people told him he most go and help Hrothgar since he is a great solider. Beowulf drove five giants into chains. Beowulf is able to boast proudly about all of his accomplishments. The four characteristics of Beowulf, courage, bravery, superhuman powers, and the ability to boast his accomplishments are found all throughout the poem.
