Beowulf Surge of Power “ They live in secret places, windy cliffs, wolf dens where water pours from the rocks, Then runs underground where the mist stream like black clouds ”(154-155,p25) Beowulf ,translated by Burton Raffel, is a story about a heroic figure and a great warrior who fights against a monster and a dragon to defend the Danes. In “ Beowulf,” the author reveals the values and attitude of Anglo-Saxon society connecting to the theme of triumph of good over evil also through beowulfs fate of Christianity and the power of God. To begin with Beowulf triumphing of evil shows virtue, immorality and his own intuition and power from God in order to defeat all the obstacles in his quest for peace.ThroughoutS his battles, Beowulf establishes the idea that good always triumphs over evil, and a symbol of goodness is light and it is what protects beowulf, “A brilliant light burned all around him, the lake itself like a fiery flame.”(201-203,p26). There are many symbols that represent good in Beowulf, light being one of the symbols. The power of God's light is what helps Beowulf in his journey to defeat Grendel and his mother in her dark murky water lair and with the power of God, Beowulf is able to survive underwater for a long period of time, he is able to not be harmed in any way and God grants Beowulf an immense victory. Afterwards,Beowulf finds himself defeating grendel's mother with a giant sword, “the best of all weapons but so massive that no ordinary man could lift its carved and decorated length”(244-246,p27) Beowulf defeats grendel with his bare hands and is forced to fight with grendel's unforgiving mother. Tired and battered Beowulf is able to conquer grendels mother, war-weary Beowulf gets the colossal sword hanging from the wall lifts it over his head and gets her in the neck and cuts through, her body fell to the floor lifeless.Beowulf is given
