Not only will he be given gold when he wins the battle but ancient treasures well be in his possession. After defeating Grendel’s mother Beowulf chopped off the head of Grendel and took it back to king Hrothgar. After fifty winters, Beowulf now an old man fought the dragon alone. He did not want his men to risk their lives. That was the final battle for Beowulf and the last of him too.
This truly exemplary feat is pictured to us when the book says, “[Beowulf] stopped those claws/ In his fists till they cracked, clutched Grendel/ Closer.”(50) In addition Beowulf also swims for hours to find, battle, and kill his enemy that was Grendel’s mother. Here, the hero had to lift a Giant-made-sword off the wall to kill the beast. Any lesser man would surely have been defeated and never seen again. Swinging the sword, Beowulf beheaded both Grendel and his mother, ending them forever. Finally, Beowulf even manages to find courage greater than other men when he faces down a full-blown dragon in his old age in order to save his kingdom.

Each battle he fought glorified his strength and being. For Beowulf opening up one door always meant a new quest. From dragons to sea witches Beowulf’s fought for the greater good of his people. Through out his battles the great and mighty Beowulf not only grew physically, but at mind as well.
In the poem, Beowulf travels to Denmark without an invitation to reveal his destiny as “the mightiest man on earth, / highborn and powerful” (Lines 197-198). Only because Beowulf thinks it his is job to kill an indomitable monster, he travels across the sea to defeat him. Once Beowulf reached Denmark, he said, “Then news of Grendel, / hard to ignore, reached me at home…Now I mean to be a match for Grendel, / settle the outcome in single combat” (Lines 409-10/ 425-26). Beowulf travels across the sea thinking it is his job to defeat Grendel, yet not knowing what will come of his actions. He risked his existence, his wealth, and his men.
Beowulf’s first fight with Grendel was a heroic moment. This happened when the monster within him started to evolve into a different him. He killed Grendel with his own bare-hands. This made him feel like a strong, and powerful man who could defeat everyone else. Yes, he did kill a beast that avenged a whole town, but that is no reason to cut an arm off as a trophy.
In the novel, Beowulf, the main character is the epitome of an epic hero. He has great strength, he is morally sound, and, for the most part, he thinks of others before he thinks of himself. Beowulf comes to the Geats’ aid when an evil monster named Grendel terrorizes their mead hall. He courageously defeats the monster and defeats the monster’s vengeful mother. Through these battles, Beowulf’s strength, humbleness and courageousness is revealed.
The characteristics of superhuman strength and courage are seen throughout the story of Beowulf and define why he is an epic hero. Beowulf gets these characteristics because the people want to show that only Beowulf could be the only one to defeat Grendel because everyone else who tried failed and got killed. Beowulf is an epic hero because he performs brave deeds. We can see this in the scene after he fights Grendel. Even though that is all that he planned on doing he stayed and went to go find Grendel’s mother and kill her since she was in distraught of her only son dying, and she took Hrothgar’s friend.
He rules peacefully for fifty years, until there is a thief wakes the dragon who guards treasure up. It flies and flame Geats and Geatish in fire through the night. Beowulf decides to go fight against dragon with his old-aged strength. This time the honored kind doesn’t fight to get any fame, he got it enough in the past. The reason for him to fight is to protect his land and his people.
Fray is only one of Lamion and Kinetics sons, but unlike his brother, Vladamier, Fray is immensely strong, brave, handsome and completely fearless. Fray slayed the beast with ease, and everyone rejoiced and praised him for saving their lives. That night the city had a celebration honoring Fray’s braveness. Vladamier gets extremely jealous of his brothers accomplishments and decides to run away to the land of Attona, a land of pure darkness where no light reaches, the completely opposite of their world Electratia. A few days go by and no one has seen Vladamier, Fray is worried about him but he soon forgets about his lost brother.
