Title: Beorn the Proud Author: Madeline Polland Type: Historical Fiction Characters: Beorn, Ness, Anlaf the Sea King, Helge, and Leif the Giant Beorn the Proud is a story of the clash of Christian and pagan cultures, as illustrated by a Viking boy’s conversion by his Irish captive. Viking raiders – also known as Black Strangers – attack Ireland’s coast and take a young Christian girl named Ness, the daughter of a chieftain, making her a slave to Beorn, a proud Viking boy of twelve who one day will be king. She is expected to be combative, and though she is in spirit, she allows her Christian teachings to guide her. She prays for her family and friends who have been lost in the raid, and also for her enemies, who now hold her as a slave. She speaks only of one God, something unknown to Beorn and his fellow Vikings. She tells them of love and forgiveness, which is the greatest weapon in any battle. He is a twelve-year-old warrior who will be king one day and is determined to lead by example – bravery – even in the face of death. He also has no problems killing animals for the days meal, or even going into battle to defend his rightful crown to be King of all of Denmark against Helge once his father dies. Beorn trusts no one - because to a Viking to let your guard down is certain death. Ness, the daughter
