Year-round schooling is a better system than traditional because it’s better for students learning, it keeps kids involved and engaged, and, as much as this might surprise you, it doesn’t mean less vacation time. So on that first day back, your probably freaking out. Your thinking, “I DON’T REMEMBER THIS!! HOW CAN A TEACHER EXPECT ME TO REMEMBER THIS STUFF AFTER A WHOLE SUMMER! !” They shouldn’t.
Year round school is also essential for teachers as well as students. Teachers, and students wont feel burnt out by April or May, making the production of both higher. In the following paragraphs I will tell anyone who reads this that the smartest decision is to be for year round school. (Year-Round schools Look Better All the Time, Pg. 1-2) A traditional school year would have a 180-day school year with short breaks for the holidays followed by a 12-week summer break.
Lauren Benzing Ms. Nielsen English 9 6 November 2009 Year-Round Schooling: A Beneficial Opportunity Students, do you often feel bored at the end of summer? Do you hate forgetting material you have previously learned? Teachers, isn't it frustrating to have to waste precious class time re-teaching and reviewing things that students have already learned, but forgot? Year-round school would be a simple, yet beneficial solution to these problems. For many reasons, a year-round school schedule would be a great leap forward for the education systems of America, which are lacking compared to European and Asian ones (Holland).
I always felt the need to give back to the program because it was a program was run by volunteers, volunteering their free time to give kids something to do afterschool other than cause mischief being that is wasn’t in the best of neighborhoods. During middle school I also did similar volunteer work there to give me something extra to do afterschool on my free time. My overall accomplishment in doing this project is really to give back to the community from which I came from. Before the program starts I will go through a basic training giving me the skills I need to assist a program leader in running a class. As a volunteer, I will be observed by my mentor and other program leaders in my skills of helping to run a class and completing tasks assigned to me.
Summer School registration and course offering information will be available during the second semester. Students may see their counselor for more information. Early Graduation: Because of the value inherent in a person’s high school experience apart from his/her accumulation of the 22.5 credits necessary for graduation, Warren Township High School,
Eg: If there is a school trip that cost certain amount of money a young person from a more wealthy back ground will be able to go and enjoy the visit learning new things, sharing experiences with their peers. A y.p who is not in a financial position to go will not get to enjoy and learn the benefits and is excluded from the group. A young person who is financially stable has the choice to from a variety of hobbies and interests which they may want to explore and possibly achieve in. This gives them the opportunity to feel good about themselves and the chance to develop new skills and to develop themselves. As well as the chance to meet new people.
Being at ACLC has allowed me to take class I otherwise couldn’t take at a conventional high school such as English 1A, a course that covers on year of English, at a college level, in a year. I’m also able take beginner piano and all these courses are of no charge to me. Being able to take these courses is a major boost in my chances of getting into college and I am thankful for them though I was very close to walking away from these opportunities and this school. Yes, Alameda High and Encinal students can take classes at College of Alameda but that was only during the summer and they can’t go to Laney or Berkeley for more classes. At ACLC, I could take classes during the school year if my schedule and free periods allowed it.
Many people believe school should not be all year round for many reasons. In the summer time people go away, stress builds up and it would be hot to learn in and for teachers to teach in for schools that do not have air conditioning. I’m not with the idea of changing the school schedules because we should enjoy our summer, it will be too much tension or stress through the school year and it’ll be extremely hot during classes and studies.
Similarly it is easier to take part in extra-curricular activities such as plays, sports matches and art if they do not have to arrange travel home late at night or after the school buses have left. Diversity of experience is not neglected as many schools run community volunteering schemes, and anyway students will spend substantial periods away from school in the holidays. Living with peers of their own age, round the clock, teaches children how to get along with each other and compromise. A variety of characters and interests must be accommodated, teaching children tolerance and compromise in a regulated environment. This can be especially helpful for working with university or company colleagues in the future.
Key Points The article “Mid-Columbia schools try to beat student forgetfulness” by Jacques Von Lunen primarily focuses on how teachers and schools alike are aiming to prevent students’ “learning backslide” that occurs from summer break. Principal Niki Arnold of Eastgate Elementary School in Kennewick commented that students could lose between four and six weeks’ worth of learning during summer vacation (Von Lunen, 2011). Interestingly, studies have shown that students from lower-income families fell behind even more. (Von Lunen, 2011). Due to this significant drop in learning, students are often at different intellectual levels and teachers have to be creative in coming up with solutions to combat this.
