benefits of Same-Sex Marriage As time goes on, new ideas and laws change. We are in a time now for a whole new era for gay rights. “Hiding in the closet,” was a term once used in regards to being privately homosexual. Now that it is a thing of the past. Gays and lesbians are more open with their sexuality than ever before. Gays and lesbians face robust attitudes on their extraordinary lifestyle and substantial opposition to wanting to wed their same-sex partner. According to a 2008 study by the Williams Institute at University of California, Los Angeles School of Law as long as gay and lesbian couples are lawfully granted to wed, it is beneficial to the economy. Same-sex weddings could create hundreds of new jobs and pump hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy. The study estimates that over the next three years, gay weddings will generate $64 million in additional tax revenue for the state, and another $9 million in marriage-license fees for counties (1). Extending the right for gays and lesbians to wed is also beneficial to promoting family stability, fostering psychological, physical, and social wellbeing amongst the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender) community. Just like Jim Crow and denying women the vote, opposition to gay marriage will be viewed as anachronistic, and an example of an earlier, less enlightened era in our history. Works Cited Badgett, M.V.
