Rationale * Purpose: This presentation is to inform the audience about Kangaroo Care and the benefits of Kangaroo Care in the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). * Audience: My ideal audience would be parents of term babies and premature babies/neonates. Neonatal ICU, Labor and Delivery, and Mother Baby nurses could also benefit from this presentation. * Significance: It is important to provide appropriate information to the audience for them to understand the benefits to both baby and parents. Presentation Plan Introduction 1. Attention getting opening: According to the World Health Organization there are approximately 15 million babies that are born preterm every year. (World Health Organization, 2014) Previously, parents weren’t able to hold preterm infants and had limited hands on or touch time. The only interaction they had was looking through the incubator. Kangaroo Care offers a way for parents to have contact and interaction with their infant that is beneficial to mom, dad, and baby. It is encouraged for them to do skin to skin contact or Kangaroo Care as soon as the baby can tolerate it. This may aid in the infant survival and shorten the NICU stay. 2. Thesis: Research suggests that Kangaroo Care is beneficial for premature infants because it promotes bonding with parents and normalizes vital signs. 3. Preview of Main Points: a. Kangaroo care promotes bonding between baby and parents. b. Not only does Kangaroo Care promote bonding, but it can often improve an infant’s vital sign even bringing them to normal limits. Main Point I: Kangaroo Care promotes bonding a) Allows parents to feel close to their baby. (March of Dimes, 2014) b) Infants may have a better chance of being able to breastfeed. (March of Dimes, 2014) c) This aids in breast stimulation resulting in more breastmilk production. (March
