Connor Olwell History 1220 History of the U.S. since 1865 Rivethead: Tales From The Assembly Line Rivethead by Ben Hamper is my favorite book so far not only because it’s the most interesting but also it’s easier to relate and is very funny at certain points. But why did Ben Hamper write this book? Ben Hamper wrote this book for one reason, to show people what it is like to be a hardworking American. He wanted to show people the irreverent look into “the American workplace”. The tittle says it all, Tales From the Assembly Line, the book is exactly that. The book was written as if Ben Hamper was trying to get something off his chest. He wanted to tell people his story. Being a man plays somewhat of a roll into the book. As a man he is expected to work at the general motors factory. As a man he did not want to end up like his father. He did not want to be a drunk and leave his family for some random woman. He had something to prove and that was to be a real man unlike his father. Religion played a roll in Ben’s early life. His family was catholic, very strict and assertive. Even though his father was a slob they kept strong religious views. Ben’s social economic status is a poor general motors worker in Michigan. His social economic status was another influence for him to become something more than just another car worker. Coming up in a family who was almost built for every man to work at general motors. His social economic status was set before he even became a assembly line worker. A fourth-generation factory worker, raised on hard music, hard liquor and soft drugs, given a parochial school education, Hamper was the eldest of eight children deserted by their father, supported by their mother.
