Community plays a crucial role in shaping an individual’s sense of belonging as it influences how the world and its people are viewed. Belonging is a perception. Perceptions of belonging vary depending on the personal, cultural, historical and social contexts that have shaped an individual’s views. Community is an overpowering issue in shaping a person’s sense of belonging. Peter Skryznecki’s poem ‘Feliks Skrzynecki’ celebrates his father and documents the migrant experience of belonging in a new country and culture. His second poem ’10 Mary Street’ reflects on the family home and how this was integral to his family having a sense of belonging in Australia. The film ‘Yolngu Boy’ explores indigenous society, and the bond of friendship. Stephanie Dowrick’s article ‘Welcome Stranger’ identifies the importance of belonging for our own emotional health and well-being and to consciously work to include others in daily lives and communities.   Each text discusses the needs of individuals to belong to a group or community and how that community plays a role in their feeling of belonging.

As an adult, Peter Skrzynecki pays tribute to his father, and his strength in adapting to his new homeland in his poem ‘Feliks Skrzynecki’.   It explores the poets initial lack of understanding of the differences between their experiences as they tried to belong in the community.   A connection between place and people was important for Feliks to feel content.   He “loved his garden like an only child” this simile demonstrates his dedication to his garden and his connection to it.   His devotion to his garden also makes him a part of his local neighbourhood. Feliks also belongs with his Polish friends through a shared history and “reminisced.
