Belonging Essay Belonging is a literary trope relevant to all types of genres of publication and film. perceptions that affect belonging can be determines by oneself; by intrinsic flaws and attributes, by choices made by the individual, by the individuals physical and emotional potential to belong and by society as a whole. however, the perceptions can be altered by physical and/or emotional barriers placed upon the individual. this is clearly shown through the lyrical work of "Institutionalized" a song by the American crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies. It was released in 1983 as the only single from their debut album, Suicidal Tendencies, "The Crucible" a 1953 play by the American playwright Arthur Miller and "V for Vendetta" a 2005 thriller film directed by James McTeigue and written by The Wachowski Brothers. Through the lyrical work of Institutionalized follows a complicated Mike, through a series of social conflicts within himself, friends and, more significantly, parents. The lyrics in the verses are not sung, but spoken in a run-on sentence style. We are led to believe that this song is about not belonging due to the frantic and powerful confrontations and emotional outbursts that mike is challenged with. However the problem isnt him not wanting to belong but about him failing to belong. "sometimes i try to do things and it just doesnt work out the way i wanted to. "I get real frustrated and i try hard to do it and i take my time and it doesnt work out the way i wanted to" clearly pointing out to us that it is about him not succeeding and that he has made and individual choice to do anything to belong. Through the song we are introduced to a sence of autority or dominant position wanting more from mike but he isnt willing to give it. "well you know if you want to talk about it ill be here you know and youll probabbly fell alot better if you
