Bryan Pore English 1-A Professor Kokalari October 3, 2012 Prompt 2 Believing in Pluralism There are endless amounts of beliefs when it comes to religion and believing in God. Due to these different beliefs, people act and hold certain traditions differently depending on what religion or God that they believe in. For example, Christians celebrate Christmas and open presents, Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah and wear a distinctive hat called a Yamaka, and most African Americans celebrate Kwanza in which they celebrate themselves and their history. People also sometimes act differently towards one another depending on what religion they believe in; you can consider this to compare to the term racism. She goes on talking about the group of friends she socialized with during lunch. This group of friends included a Mormon, one who was Jewish, a Catholic, a Lutheran, and a Hindu. She states that they were all very serious when it came to their beliefs in their religion, but they almost never talked about each other’s religions or beliefs. Somebody would say that they couldn’t eat a distinct kind of food, any food at all, or not eat food for a certain amount of time. They all knew that it had something to do with the religion that they believed in but none of them decided to explain the reasoning behind it. The only thing they really had to say is that my mom said so or it’s just a normal tradition, but no religious history behind why they acted the way they did. I believe this is a perfect example of pluralism because even though the friends sitting at the lunch table didn’t feel the need to explain or didn’t know how, the other friends didn’t judge them for what their religion’s traditions were. Most people these days do not look at each other any differently just because they believe in a different religion, but there are some people that do which can be considered as being racist. Eboo Patel explains that she believes in pluralism which is the acceptance of the value and validity of religions other than one’s own. She then explains the true meaning of pluralism and how to really believe in it. After going through a tough situation at her high school that she attended with a friend revealed her the true meaning of pluralism and how to really believe in it. Even though she was related to a group of friends that all shared different beliefs and religions, there was a conflict where her Jewish friend was starting to be made fun of at school because of his beliefs. Instead of Eboo putting her foot down and confronting neither the bullies nor her friend, she decided to ignore the situation instead. Her friend reminds her of this situation years after it occurred and she states that it’s the worst experience of her life. She then comes to realization that in order to truly believe in pluralism that you have to have the courage to act on it when it is necessary. She says she can’t go back and change the past of her Jewish friend, but now she has the experience to prevent it from happening in the
