Genetics, Brain Structure, and Behavioral Presentation Evaluation Terrie Clardy PSY 340 June 4, 2012 Taleshia L. Chandler, M.S. I got the chance to look through Team C’s slide show presentation. They chose to do their presentation on Bipolar disorder. They went into great detail about what it is, what causes it and a few treatment options. They also went into detail of patterns people with bipolar have, how genetics play a role and how a person’s family plays a role in helping the patient feel better. Many parts of the brain are affected by the disorder and because of this depression are usually diagnosed too. The depression can really bring a person’s whole day down. When a person is experiencing an extreme low or depression they have body aches, long lasting sadness, easily irritated and feelings of wanting to stay in bed all day long. This affects their behavior, social life and family life. A person with the disorder can have feelings of guilt and hopelessness, anger, and easily irritated. The different types of medications vary from lithium, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants. There are so many different kinds because it bipolar is complex and varies in severity. Lithium is the first line of help for patients with bipolar. The reason is because it is effective for those with severe manic and depressive stages. Anticonvulsants are prescribed to those who have signs of rapid cycling or mixed episodes. Lastly, antidepressants are prescribed to those with stage 1 bipolar and they also receive a mood stabilizer. Therapy is also known to help people with this disorder. Family therapy helps the families work through issues that may be causing the episodes to be more frequent or severe. It also helps the family get a better understanding of what is going on with their loved one and how they can fix the environment around them to decrease the
