Behavioral Management Is The Key to Successful Management of Diverse Teams Abstract Managing a diverse workforce requires understanding there behavioral needs and meeting them. Motivating employees requires understanding their needs and meeting them. Behavioral management skills allows manager to understand what drives their employees and how to best meet those needs. Needs are driven by more than just individual needs, but also cultural and even generational needs. Behavioral Management Is The Key to Successful Management of Diverse Teams I believe the key to successfully managing teams today is behavioral management. Managers must understand how to identify and meet the behavioral needs of his team and its individual members. Every member of the team has personal needs that must be met if they are to feel good about their employment environment. They also have different levels of needs that a manager must meet. Some employees need to be micromanaged while others simply need to be checked in on. Managing the diverse needs of a team requires that a manager understand the needs of his team members and works hard to meet these needs. The Hawthorne Studies In the 1920’s and 1930’s a team led by Elton Mayo conducted several experiments on workers at Western Electric’s Hawthorne Illinois Electrical Works plant. Initially these studies were created to examine the correlation of productivity and work place conditions such as illumination. While the studies did not find the correlations they expected to find they did provide the basis for the their of behavioral management. The Hawthorne Studies were divided into three experiments. The initial experiment evaluated the role of illumination on productivity and was unsuccessful. In 1927 six women were selected for a second experiment that examined the effect of physical and environmental effects. The
