Behavior of Individuals Related To the Environment It is well-known that “Who keeps company with the wolf will learn to howl”. There was news that a baby was raised by wolves, and learned the characters of wolves. The baby, who grew up in this environment around wolves, gained all knowledge and skills from them, and behaved like a wolf. An excellent example of this would be George Orwell’s Shooting an Elephant, which demonstrated the author, who was sub-divisional police officer in Moulmein, killed the elephant without control. He was regarded to be useful when the crowd looked forward to watching him killing the mad elephant. Another example would be from Ray Bradbury’s the veldt. In this novel, George’s family lived in the house, which helped them do everything in daily life. George and his wife Lydia tried to lock the nursery up and moved out this house after they realized it was not good for them to rely on the house. At the end, the children killed their parents. Different environment exerts different effects on the behavior of individuals. Respectful and light environment produces the positive influences on the individuals. Since the environment of shooting an elephant and the veldt, pushed Orwell to please the crowd and made George’s family spoiled and lazy, obviously that healthy and positive environment has the ability to influence and change behavior of people. Healthy and positive environment such as being confident and self-esteem makes an influence on behavior of people. When Orwell decided to watch the mad elephant for a while, if he did not go crazy, he would go home. However, he saw the crowd around him, and he changed his mind: “but at that moment I glanced round at the crowd that had followed me. It was an immense crowd, […] they did not like me, but with the magical rifle in my hands I was momentarily worth watching” (Orwell).
