The teachers also should have stepped in when they saw the fight happening and not just stood there. It teaches us students that we should stand up for kids, and teachers are not always the good person in the situation and there could be favoring. In conclusion, I think that The Chocolate War was a very good book that taught very interesting lessons. It always makes me think twice but saying, “no” to something that I should do. I think the lesson here is to just plain out respect everyone and you will not have any problems.
Erica Goldson Valedictorian Speech Response Erica Goldson brought up a very controversial and very interesting topic about our current education system in the US. She states that students are so focused at memorizing data and getting good grades, that they miss out on the whole idea of learning and being educated. I agree with her, students should be learning and absorbing the material, instead of memorizing for the next big test and just forgetting about it later on. Graduating seems like the top priority in students nowadays, and to me that is just upsetting. And the students who are very talented and are very motivated to learn and be driven in a non-academic subject seem to have a more negative image than the people who are driven by academics.
Books are constantly beint banned. Parents do not want their children to be exposed to materials the find inapropriate. Although it is easy to understand a parent wanting to protect his/her child sometimes borders are crossed. People are right when they say limits should be set, but the question comes up..."who should be held responsible for setting them.?" Who gets to choose what is right and not right.
For example, the most effective method would be, to respect the students and their feelings before they can respect you. Dr. Michaels stated that, “You will gain respect by knowing the emotional, physical, and psychological place of your students. “Show that you care.” This all leads back to students wanting to know that their teacher not only cares about their education but them as an individual. As an after school instructor, I have dealt with many cases where a students didn’t feel like they had to show me respect right off the bat. Which is something that I can understand, because children don’t really comprehend the importance of respect or manners, its something that has to be taught to them.

Making it on your own At times people tend to work well while they are under pressure. To others they simply must be under pressure to get work done and give their full effort. In her article In Praise of the F Word, Mary Sherry argues “Flunking as a regular policy has just as much merit today as it did two generations ago. We must review the threat of flunking and see it as it really is- a positive teaching too.” By making it clear to students that flunking can definitely be a result of them not putting in the time and effort in assuring they pass their class will make them more determined to learn and earn their good grades, it will also help stop those students who choose not to even try in their classes. One pitfall is teaching to the test, parents and teachers feels that the NCLB encourages, and rewards, teaching children to score well on the test, rather than teaching with a primary goal of learning. As a result, teachers are pressured to teach a narrow set of test-taking skills and a test-limited range of knowledge. A few more pitfalls are: problems with the standardized tests, teachers’ qualification standards, and failure to address the reason for lack of achievement just to name a few. This often resulted in teacher discouragement, role ambiguity, and superficial responses to administrative goals. A few strengths are: standards are set for teacher qualifications, NCLB emphasizes reading, writing, and math, and NCLB requires schools to focus on providing quality education to students who are often underserved, including children with disabilities, from low-income families, non-English speakers, as well as African-Americans and Latinos.
