Beowulf was an epic poem, which was written during the Anglo-Saxon period by an Unknown Author. Also was one of the important literatures during the Anglo-Saxon period. This poem contains Anglo-Saxons like for example Strength, Courage and Bravery. Therefore, these values such as strength, courage and bravery apply to the main character in this poem Beowulf. To began with strength. This value plays a big role in this poem because according to this poem Beowulf is the strongest man on earth. When he went to fight Grendel, he fought with his bare hands because he didn’t believe that it was fair to fight with his bare hands. On page 51 “Saw that his strength was deserting him, his claws Bound fast, Higlac’s brave follower tearing at His hands.” This quote shows that Beowulf was so strong that he ripped up Grendel’s arm during the battle with his bare hands. Also Grendel wasn’t like a normal human, he was a huge monster that everyone was scared off. This how Beowulf proved his strength to his people and to his king. Later he was reward with many treasures, land and gold that he had earn by his king Higlac. To continue another Anglo-saxon value that the epic poem named Beowulf contains was Courage. Beowulf this was courageous in several event during this poem but he was most courageous when he was fighting the dragon which was know has his “Last Battle”. On page 60 it mentions “That armor, fought with that sword, until Beowulf called him to his side, led him into war. The dragon discovered his courage, and his weapon, when the rush of battle brought them together.” During this battle with the dragon Beowulf was old but he still had the courage to go fight that dragon for his people as a responsible king.
