I mean how could we expect a four year old to deal with the stress of a pageant without a full body massage? The more pampered the better! These days it’s become simple to turn a living breathing toddler into a barbie doll. Not only pretty like a barbie doll, but also the fake, plastic-like perfection of a barbie as well. Their skin is perfect with the help of fake tans and more makeup than the average woman will wear in her entire lifetime.
There is a long standing festival in Luling, Texas; the Watermelon Thump. Each year a queen is chosen from the entering senior class girls and each year the rules are the same; anyone can vote. The winner will get a substantial college scholarship for her college of choice. So there is a local group of women whose daughters have all made “queen” and they want to make sure that the “right kind” of girl gets it each year. Some of these women work out of town; they have parties the day of the voting and have even been known to rent buses to bring voters in.

In this journal entry I'm going to talk about money and why people love it so much. The other day i was watching Tyra and it was about 3 ladies that are making sure their children become successful in life. In my head i thought yeah every parent wants their child to be successful but they go to the extreme. this one lady picks up her child from school at like 12:00 then she goes to all these classes and they get home at like 11:00. These parents are greedy for money and trying to live their life through their children.
Now that’s growing up without a childhood. Jane Smiley seems like a great parent who cares about her children but to allow her daughters to put on makeup even entering their teenage years just isn’t right. Her girls where prematurely growing up, where behaving beyond their age, and with their only priority being beautiful at all times it seem to help them in the long run. As they burned off the “Barbie stage” and grew into more important things down their lives. Like for example Smiley talks about her older daughter, “Now she is planning to graduate school and law school and become an expert on woman’s health issues, perhaps adolescent health issues like anorexia and bulimia” (377).

But not all the pageants have this requirement. Beauty pageants are one of the fastest growing businesses in America grossing over 5 million dollars. The parents invest so much money into a pageant that they have to hire a make-up artist, hair stylist, sing or dance lessons, lodging to pageant locations, entry fees, the different outfits, etc. Its mind boggling that the prize money is less than the preparation for these pageants. On a September issue of People magazine shows a transformation of a normal little girl into one the contestants for a pageant, the total cost was $3,703 for wiglet, dress, and to boots that took 3 hours to complete.
Chrysten Jordan L. Hicks English 1 Pre-AP September 28, 2011 When girls are young, they start planning and dreaming about their wedding day, and can’t wait until they grow up to finally be married and experience the dream they’ve always wanted. They see it as a fairytale, and love the fact that they will get to be a real princess on their wedding day and have the best day that they could think of. However, a fairytale is not what marriage is at all. On the contrary, about 83 percent of women are in one way or another, abused by their husbands. For the truth is women are sometimes considered to be weak, and are easily overpowered and imprisoned by men, and are not able to live out their dreams, and are only left to wonder.
