Part 1 1. The Gift of the Magi 2. I think Della’s long hair and James’ watch both represent something valuable to them. Della’s hair shows that she can be feminine even if she isn’t rich. James’ watch gives him some pride; he has a golden watch and he’s poor so he isn’t that lowly of a man.
Hester is found to be very beautiful physically, “Young woman was tall…figure of perfect elegance,” however other puritan women would feel that she is trying to show off her beauty which was a sin. Although, secretly they envy Hester as they are never seen in that way. Cathy also from a young age showed physical beauty, “she had the bonniest eye, the sweetest smile and lightest foot in the parish” however this was seen to be more innocent and much more expectant of a woman in this era. Though Austen very frankly notes that the bloom of youth has left Anne, and that she is not the prettiest of the young ladies in the novel, Anne becomes most decidedly more attractive when her better qualities are noted. Anne is proud of her appearance, and she is deeply hurt after overhearing that Captain Wentworth thinks her appearance much changed for the worst. Unlike her father, Anne also takes pride in practicality, intellect, and patience. Anne is feminine while possessing none of what Austen clearly sees as the negative characteristics of her gender; Anne is neither catty, flighty, nor hysterical.
The true, natural beauty of a Black woman is rarely celebrated. Only when a woman that is of African descent shows a majority of European features, then is this woman’s beauty ever celebrated. The kinky hair or the dark skin tone is not what is praised. Instead she is glorified for the straightness of her tresses, and the lightness of her skin. She is perfect because she can blend in with White beauty.

On the contrast, other women on the show such as Amy seem to have an extraordinary amount of intelligence, yet lack the pretty looks to go along with it. They seem to portray women as opposite ends of the spectrum; either they are all brawn and no brain or extremely intelligent but lack beauty, both sides being socially awkward to an extent. This contrast may have been done in order to show the differences between certain women and how the men of the show view and treat them, often with the intent of comedy. It’s amusing to the public to see a pretty girl struggle with understanding a simple concept, and equally amusing seeing an intelligent average looking girl struggle with trying to fit in. However, here in lies the problem: the way they represent women is harmful because it leaves people with the impression that if there’s a good
