Aleksander Jevtic was a Serbian man that was rounded up in Vukovar, a town in Croatia. The Serbs had meant to round up mostly Croats, but because they share a border, look very similar, and speak nearly the same exact language, it was hard for the soldiers to distinguish between the Croats and the Serbs. One officer recognized Aleksander Jevtic amongst the rest of the prisoners and picked him out of the line. He told him to round up all the Serbs to be taken out and hypothetically saved from further abuse and torture. However, Aleksander didn’t just pick out the Serbs. He went up to Croats and called them by traditional Serbian names, telling them to come with him and thus saving their life (49). It took years for him to eventually be honored for his bravery. The problem he ended up with is that the Croats hated him because he was a Serb and the Serbs hated him because he had betrayed them when saving Croats. Like our previous character, life for him was hard after his actions. Avner Wishnitzer was born in a Kibbutz in Israel (87). Instead of doing his nation’s mandatory two year military service, however, he decided to enroll in the special forces unit, similar to our Navy Seals. He was a very patriotic individual and served for 3.5 years before going into the reserves and continuing his education at Tel Aviv University (89). It was his sister that convinced him to attend a lecture about Palestinians living in the West Bank, a highly conflicted area between Israelis and Palestinians. After seeing this lecture, he realizes that something was not right about what was going on down there, so he decided to take a trip. He went and visited the West Bank, and realized that the Palestinians there were simply people just like he was, and that the Israelis were making it so peace was impossible in this region.
