The Beatles Greatly influenced by rock legend Elvis Presley, John Lennon started his first band called the Quarrymen in 1956 at age sixteen. The Quarrymen were the start of one of the greatest bands of all time. They were one of the few artists that were the best and most popular at what they did. They took anything good about Rock & Roll and changed it into something more original and more exciting. They were one of the few artists who wrote and performed their own music. Their success was remarkable, and the Beatles hold the record for most number one singles by any band. Twenty of the Beatles singles reached number one on the charts and most stayed for more than three months. The Beatles have spent a total of 147 weeks at number one on the charts. The Beatles consisted of a four-man group including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The Beatles were also called “The Fab Four”, and were all from Liverpool England and came together to make some of the best rock music ever heard. James Paul McCartney was born in Liverpool, England on June 18, 1942. As a young boy, Paul had been exposed and taught about music. His father, James McCartney was the leader of a band known as “Jim Mac Jazz Band” in the twenties. When Paul was fourteen, his mother Mary had died of breast cancer and not long after that he bought his first guitar, and learned to play. In 1957, Paul met John Lennon at a church picnic. After John had listened to Paul, he had decided to have him join his band, “The Quarrymen”. Paul became the band’s leading songwriter. Over the years, the band would change into The Beatles.
