BCOM/275 Chilean Copper Mine Collapse - Communication Release After learning of the copper mine collapse near Copiapo, Chile at around 2:15 in the afternoon on August 5, 2010 that trapped 33 miners, the owners of the mine, Minera San Esteban Primera, had to work fast to come up with two different communication strategies to notify the employees of the company and the family members of the miners. Below are two communication strategies that the company will use to notify these individuals. The company believes the most effective way to communicate this tragedy is through a company-wide memo to the employees and a face-to-face meeting with the family members. This company-wide memo is to the employees here at Minera San Esteban Primera. If this information has not already been received, earlier this afternoon there was a major accident at our gold and copper mine outside of Copiapo. The roof of the mine caved in leaving 33 of our miners trapped 2,300 feet below the surface. At this point, we have no word on the health of these individuals, but we are hoping and praying that they could get to a nearby chamber where there is an emergency supply of oxygen, food, and water. We have alerted the local officials about this incident, and we are getting boring equipment put in place to locate these trapped miners. We have already contacted the miners’ family members and have been bringing them to the site as fast as we can. Please keep these miners in your thoughts and prayers and know that we will do everything possible to get these valued employees out safe and sound no matter how long it takes. If anyone wants to help in this recovery effort, please talk to the supervisor on site, and the supervisor will let you know what can be done to help.
