Knowing Your Audience Paper Thomas Brady Mullins BCOM/275 March 23, 2014 Dr. Michael A Barker SPHR Knowing your audience is key in all communications. This is especially true in the case of the trapped Chilean miners from August 2010. For the purposes of this paper, the point of view for communicating will be from the mine owner, Minera San Esteban Primera to the external stakeholders. The stakeholders fall into two categories; the first is the families of the trapped miners and the second is the employees of Minera San Esteban Primera. Each of these stakeholders have varying degrees of interest in the situation and require differing types of information. It is important to understand these levels of interest and desires when crafting communications. Timing is also important to the content of communications and the stakeholders (T.B. Mullins, personal communication, 15 March, 2014). Initially, Minera San Esteban Primera needs to establish the facts of the situation. This is important to both stakeholders and will provide the context for all future communications. Communications detailing the level of effort being expended to their trapped counterparts and assurance measures are being taken to avoid future mishaps speak to the company’s commitment to their workforce. The article from the Metal Bulletin Daily called into question the safety standards of the company and highlighted previous fatal accidents (Weik, 2010, August 6). If the company hopes to satiate the employees, they would need to move quickly to answer these allegations, and present plans for safety improvements.
