Baseline Study of Filipinos in South Korea, Hong Kong, Switzerland, the Netherlands and United Kingdom This baseline study aimed to provide a general picture of Filipino migrants in South Korea, Hong Kong, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom in terms of their socio-demographic profile and work conditions. The study also aimed to determine the behaviour of the OFW-respondents toward: income and expenses, particularly remittances, savings and investments and identify policy needs and institutional interventions to support them. Due to the limitation in the methodology and sampling, the data gathered and presented in this study do not represent the whole migrant population in the five countries, but rather provide a glimpse/picture of the profile of the migrants and their behaviour on income, remittance, savings and investments. A total of 100 respondents (in the five countries) were interviewed, employing random sampling. In-depth interviews to migrant community leaders were also conducted. To fill in the data gaps from the interviews, secondary data from the Embassies and Filipino overseas organizations were gathered and integrated in the study. Profile There are 46, 891 Filipinos living and working in South Korea, 84% of which are temporary while 16% are permanent. Male Filipinos account to 27,872, there are 19,019 Filipino females. Among the female Filipinos, 37% were permanent (most of whom are wives of Korean nationals) while 63% are temporary. Among the males, only 2% are permanent, the rest are temporary. (Philippine Embassy, 2009) In the survey interviews conducted among 22 OFW-respondents, most were male, married, aged between 20 and 40 years old, and highly educated (85% college graduates).
