Barriers to Effective Communication David Richard DeMusz CJA/304 Thursday, December 06, 2012 Timothy L. Sullivan, J.D. Introduction: In this paper, the reader will discover and learn various ways of effective communication. The paper explains two issues identified nonverbal and verbal communication, likewise the reader receives knowledge in respect the associated components in reference to each issues. In addition the reader will discover comparisons between listening and hearing in communication, mentioning formal and informal channels of communication in organizations of criminal justice. Last topic, reflects different barriers to effective communication in criminal justice organizations and suggestive strategies which might implement overcoming communication barriers. Communication, wither nonverbal or verbal is best defined as a process that requires individuals’ practice and educate oneself to be completely effective. Furthermore, communication is important in everyday life professionally and in a more relaxed environment. Individuals, utilize various types of communication daily. Communication is identical to a carpenter needing tools. Communication, offers the ability to relay information between individuals or groups of people. As stated by Ivor Armstrong Richards, communication takes place when one mind acts upon its environment that another mind is influenced, and in that other mind an experience occurs which is like the experience in the first mind, and is caused in part by that experience’ (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). In referencing and article by author Merriam Webster (Communication, 2009) Merriam Webster, describes communication consisting of the following. “A process: by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior.” Two types of communication exist
