There are four main barriers to communication: personal barriers, process barriers, physical barriers, and semantic barriers. Communication is a critical function of an office. Getting people to work toward achieving organizational goals are primarily a matter of two elements: Employees’ internal motivation and excellent communication between the employees and management. Because managers have no control over the individual’s value system, the prudent manager must concentrate on their own communication skills, especially their ability to addresses barriers to communication. Personal Barriers Some examples of personal barriers include the communicators’ emotions, differences in perception, listening skills, and psychological distance. These personal barriers can serve as a definite impediment to open communication; therefore, discerning personal barriers can help bridge the gap between content and presentation. If the personal barriers are unknown, communication cannot be modified or enhanced. A common misstep in managing communication is the failure to understanding emotional barriers. This can cause a dysfunctional work environment and lower productivity. Emotions whether happy or depressed can derail the progression of an idea, methods of transmissions, and decoding process. Mankind is not rational creatures. Human experience anger. Managers must acknowledge that subordinates can cause the manager to be emotionally upset over an issue.
