Barriers of Effective Communication Norman Rafter CJA/304 4/30/2012 Dennis Santos There are six different components of the communication process. The first one is the context. The context may be physical, social, chronological or cultural. The sender will choose the message to communicate within a context. The second component is the sender/encoder a person who sends the message. A sender makes use of symbols (words or graphic or visual aids) to convey the message and produce the required response. Message is a key idea that the sender wants to communicate. Medium is a means used to exchange or to transmit the message. The sender must choose an appropriate medium for transmitting the message or the message may not be conveyed to the desired recipients. Recipient / Decoder a person for whom the message is intended, aimed, and targeted. The final component is the feedback it’s the main component of communication process as it permits the sender to analyze the efficacy of the message. It helps the sender in confirming the correct interpretation of message by the decoder. Feedback may be verbal (through words) or non-verbal (in form of smiles, sighs, etc.). It may take written form also in form of memos, reports, etc (ManagementStudyGuide, 2008-2012). To listen is to hear the words, notice the tone of voice, sense the mood, and observe any other cues that complement the message Hearing is sensing with our ears the words that are being spoken. Listening involves our other senses to help us understand the words being spoken. Hearing perceives words and sounds making sense of sounds. And hearing sorts out the sounds and voices. Listening is Perceiving and understanding the words and noticing tone of voice, inflexion, volume and noticing mood of the speaker and keeping mind clear of distractions and noticing nonverbal cues, including body language, facial
