Effective communication within an organization is made up of many processes and components. To become an effective listener and communicator, these processes and components must be learned and understood. Communication involves different kinds of information relayed and received by the parties involved as well as in the manner that the information is passed along. Effective communication can be between two people or a group of people. Communication can be defined as a process that involves a number of steps among two or more people for the purpose of exchanging information (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). Certain skills and practices are taken to create effective communication within a department. Some of these steps include the manner in which the information is relayed and how it is received from one person to another. For example, if the information is not understood by the person relaying the information, it can be passed along incorrectly to the person or people receiving the information. Communication requires active listening and good understanding of the material. This is extremely important within a law enforcement agency. In a law enforcement agency, there are certain measures and steps that identify the different areas of communication. Some of these components include the four regions of knowledge and the four types of communication patterns. The four regions of knowledge are also known as the Johari window, which was created by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham (Wallace & Roberson, 2009).
