1 Barriers in Business Communication Rebecca Carter COMM/208 March 13, 2012 Dr. Karen Williams 2 Barriers in Business Communication Communication, according to the dictionary, is “A process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior.” To have effective communication, whether it be at school or work, a message are received and understood by the receiver in the manner that the sender intended it to be. As continued further in my paper I will discuss communication being expressed in the workplace, barriers that are encountered in the workplace, and communicating one of my examples in a different business environment. Communication Expressed Within the Workplace Communication expressed in the workplace are based on professional relationships, developed through courtesy, attentive listening, active participation, and body language. By expressing communication within the workplace you must always be conscious of how you are presenting yourself. Also being able to recognize and accept that men and women communicate in different ways. Networking and personal contact are expressed through communication within the workplace. Attempting to speak with coworkers outside your department to learn more about the company shows that you are professionally invested in the company. This will give you the ability to communicate outside your department. Attitude and demeanor are expressed in communication within your workplace, showing that it is courteous, clear, and consistent. By having the right attitude and demeanor it gives others the impression that you care. Active participation are expressed through communication within the workplace because it shows that there are other thing to discuss rather than it always being work related topics. Body
