Marx opined that conflict holds society in order by a wealthy and powerful few that dominates and control the poorer and weaker masses. There is a clear cut parallel to Conflict Theory and the government shutdown that happened this October. 536 people- the 100 senators, the 435 congressmen and resident in the White House controlled the lives of millions of furloughed employees, the military and many more civilians because they had a visceral disagreement about the funding of the uninsured citizenry. A shutdown that happened because of Obamacare that did not even shutdown Obamacare, a crisis where millions of the poor and disenfranchised were used as pawns in a chess game of politics. No matter what one’s ideology is, some will blame a chamber of Congress, the other will blame the White House.
The economy is considered to be very unstable at the current time, and it is the duty of the United States government to do everything in their power to once again stabilize the once booming economy for the sake of the entire country and its citizens. Current Unemployment Rate Currently unemployment rates in the United Sates are a less than desirable 7.9%. Although, this number has decreased by 2.1% from its peak in recent years, it is still believed that there is a long way to go. Prior to the recession unemployment rates fluctuated between 4% and 6% (www.bls.gov, 2012). This increase in the unemployment rate is having considerable impacts on the economy.
Known also as Black Tuesday, October 29th left stockholders shattered with recorded losses reaching $40 billion dollars (Kelly, n.d.). Many banks and financial institutions began collapsing which led to irretrievable, uninsured deposits and savings. Fearing further loss, people began spending less which led to a decrease in production and an increase in unemployment. As companies began to fail, the government devised the Smoot-Hawley Tariff in order to protect American businesses. The Tariff placed high taxes on imports leading to a decline in international trade.

Now that the economy is in a downfall, that money should go towards creating more jobs, infrastructure repair, education spending and health care expansion. instead, this money is going towards a very unsuccessful war and the tax payer is having to pay more money in taxes. The most important problem is the fact that the troops and their families are the most affected by the war. In then ten years we have been involved more than 1,700 troops have been killed and over 13,000 have been wounded. From being deployed for a long time and seeing violence troops are extremely prone to developing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Symptom).
Unemployment and Its Impact On American Cities Michael Collins Marygrove College Abstract The United States, its cities, and regions for decades have been trying to maintain low unemployment rates. It is a well know fact that the economy in America is facing tough times and many companies are being forced to pass out pink slips. As a result, America and its cities have being confronted with some of the highest unemployment rates in the 21st Century. Politicians have employed many strategies and ideologies to help regulate the unemployment rate. Unfortunately, over the past 10 years these strategies and ideologies have failed.
The Great Depression was a severe period of poverty and tragedy. It effected many other countries not just America; especially in Europe, where many countries had not fully recovered from the aftermath of World War I. The cost of World War I weakened the ability of the world to respond to a major crisis. America alone had ten billon dollars of debt from the war. In Germany America’s economic failure contributed to the rise of Adolf Hiltler, so the Stock Market Crash had a domino effect on our country and others.
However, the SPH program put a lot of pressure on store managers and sales. In 2010, a large group of the R&R associates sued it for “working off the clock”. This lawsuit might cause reputation damage, and the settlement is up to $200 million. In 2008-2009 before the case, there was an economic recession. The whole luxury goods industry in the U.S. dropped over 14%, and R&R revenues declined 10%.
