On December 4, 2008 Barack Obama was declared the forty-fourth president of the United State of America. Obama made history by being the first African American president. Democratic Nominee Senator Barak Obama and Republican Nominee Senator John McCain fought in this contentious election. This is said to be one of most important elections in history for various reasons. For the first time in American history, an African American man had been running for the position as President of the United States. If Obama won, the course of history would be changed forever. The economical state of America after George W. Bush was president was horrible. This election would really depend on if America would move forward to a better America or dig itself deeper in this grim hole. Both president’s offered different plans on solving the economic downfall. McCain was a prominent and ardent supporter of the decision to invade Iraq and vows to keep U.S. troops there until the war is won. Obama thought differently and knew that spending $12 million in Iraq would not solve any economic problems in America. McCain supports extending President George W. Bush’s cuts and cutting corporate tax rates, while Obama would let Bush’s cuts expire for wealthy Americans, those making more than $250,000 annually, and raise capital gains tax rates, another item that normally affects primarily high-income earners. Of course the path Bush was going in was abominable and the American people knew that. If McCain continued these tax cuts on the wealthy, America would go nowhere. Obama supported stopping tax cuts on wealthy and ensuring that the majority of America, which was the middle class and lower class, were protected. McCain proposed that giving the wealthy tax cuts would give them a chance to save the economy. On health care, Obama would keep the existing job-based system and expand government involvement. He supports universal health coverage for the 47 million Americans without insurance, although he would only require coverage for children. McCain has repeatedly slammed Obama’s lack of national security experience, criticizing his willingness to talk to leaders of hostile nations without preconditions as a sign of inexperience. There are specific differences in each candidates plan to better the economy through health care.
