Baltika Baltika is the leading beer exporter on the Russian market. It was established in the northern capital of Russia, Saint Petersburg. It is part of the European Carlsberg Group company, which is comprised of 53 beer brands throughout the world. Its market share is measured at about 39.7%. The company currently operates 11 breweries in cities throughout the country and is constantly expanding through various acquisitions of competing beer brand breweries. The company currently employs over 11,000 people in over 100 locations. The Baltika brand is one of the most recognized Russian brands in the world and is also one of the most valuable in Russia. According to the Euromonitor (a privately owned, London-based market research firm), Baltika is the number 1 beer in Europe in terms of sales. Currently, the company exports to more than 70 countries around the world including Western Europe, North America and the Near East Region. Construction of the first Baltika beer brewery began in 1978 in St. Petersburg and was completed in 1990. Upon completion, the company shipped out 27,000 liters in the month of November. The official brand “Baltika” didn’t exist at the time, but was under development. Instead the plant produced beer under the widespread trademarks of: Zhigulevskoye, Rizhskoye, Admiralteiskoye and Prazdnichnoye. Some of these beers are also exported and can be found in the United States. The idea behind the brand of Baltika was that it would be a strong competitor to European brands and will be another way of recognition for the country itself. During the beginning stages of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the brewery was privatized like many other government entities. The company was then reorganized into an Open Joint-Stock Company.
