Addressing The Five Pillars Of Reading Instruction Education Essay This paper explores language acquisition using the five pillars of reading instruction identified by the National Reading Panel during the Bush administration. Through published articles, varying levels of instruction, importance and influence of each pillar are addressed. Research-based approaches and methods are discussed as they relate to struggling readers and English Language Learners (ELL) for language acquisition. Functional uses of these approaches in the classroom are discussed. Language Acquisition: Addressing the Five Pillars of Reading Instruction Each year for the past 13 years, many members of the reading community have been surveyed by Reading Today for relevance of current reading topics in reading instruction; this year was no different.
This essay will discuss several socio-educational issues imbedded in the School and Society textbook. The focus of this paper centers on the first five chapters of the text. Were we will compare how the issues relate to today’s current practice in today’s school and society. In chapter one, we will look at the Athenian Political Economy and how society provided for participation of citizens in government, and expected the education experience fit citizens for that responsibility. Chapter 2 will focus on Jefferson’s plan for popular Education and his proposed four tier educational structure.

Around the 1930s through the 1970s, the whole-word approach was used and was exemplified in the Dick and Jane reading series. Rudolph Flesch published his best-selling book Why Johnny Can’t Read in 1957, urging educators to return to phonics instruction. In 1967, Jeanne Chall wrote a book, Learning to Read: The Great Debate, where Chall continues to advocate the use of direct phonics instruction. In the early 1970s, the pendulum began to swing toward the whole language philosophy which promotes a meaning-based approach to learning to read. This approach lasted a couple of decades when in the mid 1990s, a study released by the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development indicated that children with reading difficulties benefited the most from explicit phonics instruction.

The goal for these students was to be promoted to the next grade by the start of the next school year. The teachers taught study and English skills to these California middle school students who were required to attend class in order to be promoted. The participants were comprised of 20 sixth grade males and 10 females which included 21 Latinos and 9 white, non-Latino students. The seventh grade population consisted of 20 males and 11 females of which 19 students were Latino and 12 students were white or non-Latino.

Also, the researcher wanted to investigate and define the reading problems in poor readers specifically those in the fourth grade. A Universal Screening tool called Response to Intervention (RTI) was used to identify the selected students. The screening was done on two hundred and thirty fourth graders. For the period of the study, the researcher wanted to determine if students would need more intensive instruction after implementing the RTI instruction.
