Badikhel Dhema; “Personification of Deity” Badikhel an Introduction A musical instrument often serves purposes other than entertainment or aesthetics enjoyment. They are also closely connected to the supernatural and their sound connotes powerful magic. Musical instruments are also taken as an important ritual object and are venerated carefully. The shape and sound of the musical instrument has been rich in symbolism. A musical instrument has different roles in the society particularly referring to the role of music in the culture of worship. In this realm it has been used by different culture, as a weapon to protect from evil, purifier to deal with impurities, a channel to take into different dimension and to connect with the divine. In some cultures, musical instruments are kept in special shrines and are also worshipped. Badikhel, a village situated behind a small ridge north of Lele in Nepal, is inhabited by a mixed population of Pahari and Bahun- Chhetri. According to ACHARYA (1978:12) Pahari are descendants of the Newar settling in the Kathmandu Valley before the Licchavi conquered it. Today badikhel people are fighting for their own separate identity other than Newar and chettri bahun. They like to call themselves Pahari and have a very liberal mentality. This small village of (population) shares small stories of how they got the name pahari in their own ways. Some say that, since they live in small pahads (hills) near Kathmandu, they are called pahadi (one who lives in hills) and from pahadi it became pahari. Some shares a funny story with a bit of wit in their face that they got the name from the word fohori (dirty people) which became pahari later.
