Background Check Laws The Columbine school massacre brought the death of 12 high school students and 1 teacher. The Columbine school shooting was a very tragic event for the United States. However, what was not talked about is how the two teenagers managed to gain all of the weapons they used. The truth is they gained them from gun shows. The two young men went to a gun show and purchased them without needing any form of ID or background check. At most gun shows, a person can purchase a gun and have no background check required. This is because the person selling the guns does not sell guns through a business. The fact of the matter is that background checks need to be improved, and be done on all sales of guns. But instead it would make crimes happen more often. This however, is not true at all. According to the Mayors Against Illegal Guns," The killer Seung-Hui Cho involved in the Virginia Tech shooting had gained a gun he should not have been prohibited from buying because his records were never reported to the FBI's gun background check system."( An Updated Background) This means had the laws been improved then Seung-Hui Cho would not have been able to buy the weapon. The truth of the matter is Seung-Hui Cho would not have been able to purchase a gun because he would not have passed a background check due to his mental illness. If gun control laws were improved then there would far less gun related crimes because people who would fail a background check would not be able to get the gun to commit the crime. Improved gun control would prevent several crimes from happening such as: sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault and murder. Gun control needs to be improved help people protect themselves from people who would hurt them with a gun. According to the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence "gun show sales account for 40% of the firearm purchases in the U.S."(Gun Reform) The people selling the guns usually have no idea whether or not the person is legally able to buy a gun. Usually the people that are selling the guns are not concerned about anyone they are just concerned about making money. This means that if someone who should not be allowed to own a gun can to buy a gun.
