Back To School When do most people decide what they want to do with their lives? High school, college, career, family: this seems like the perfect plan for one’s life. However, it does not always work out quite this way. Most people manage to complete high school, but sometimes that is as far as they get before life hits them square in the face. At some point, years later, between soccer games and boot camp graduation, they decide it is not too late to do a little something for themselves, so they pick their dream back up and go to college, taking classes to enrich their lives. The idea is to further one’s education so that he or she can have that career he or she has always wanted. According to K.P. Cross, this would make a person a non-traditional college student as his definition describes this type of student as an adult who returns to school full- or part-time while maintaining responsibilities such as employment, family, and other responsibilities of adult life (630). However, one has to ask oneself the question, “Is going back to school going to be worth all of the sacrifices I, as well as my loved ones, going to have to make during the time it would take to get that degree I so desire?” In my opinion, and situation, after considering sacrifices such as the financial aspects, time factors, and emotional strains, going back to school and obtaining my degree will indeed be worth all of the struggles my family and I will go through. No one in my family had ever gone to college, and no one had a career; they worked regular blue collar jobs in order to take care of the family. There was never a time that my mother or father even considered going back to school to further their education. Growing up, no one in my family ever encouraged me to go to college.
