Jhonatan Lozano Eng. 1B Prof. Villanueva 11/14/2013 Baca poems in Working in the Dark “As a child, I used to go to bars with the men. There is a photograph of me in diapers, sitting on the wood floor of a cantina in Mexico, spinning empty miniatures of whiskey.” Page 51 This quote from Working In The Dark page 51 shows the irresponsibility of some parents and how bad it looks for their way of thinking that a baby is okay to grow up visiting bars, being in the drinking and smoking type of lifestyle. The method and descriptions that Baca uses to describe the places he used to visit are so detail and have such a deep meaning that makes you feel sad for the baby that has to experience things that are extremely ahead of his age. At least in my case it disgusts’ me to think parents would be so irresponsible to expose their baby to such life style. It’s almost as if they wanted that type of life for his future, this type of quotes really makes Baca a truth teller in a way it shows to you the raw truth about how some people have adult experiences at an extremely young age and unfortunately, most of the time is the parents fault that young kids into such dark and pity full lifestyle and what makes it worse is that they mistakenly believe, that lifestyle is not as bad for their kids. Baca uses such great description on the place he wants to imaginary take you, for example on page 52. “I remember the Mexican voices that came from the jukeboxes…” The way he describes the noise, the place, and what is happening in that place, it literary takes you to that place that you get the sensations that you are actually there watching listening and experiencing everything that he is describing. Journeying with Baca through a psychic landscape makes you feel as if you were present the very moment everything you are reading is happening right before your eyes. It’s hard to ignore
