AYURVEDIC TEXTILE ABSTRACT: How exotic can the garments become? Infinite. Yes, who thought that the textile manufacturers in this 21st century would talk about plants and shrubs as garments? Is it not the in-thing of the by-gone era when civilisation did not catch up with the human race? True, that was so then. But, now, the same civilisation in the guise of modernisation and health aspects is returning to natural garments. So, what was uncivilised then has now become more civilised today. All the same, there is a fundamental difference. We are not talking about wearing grass as skirts and leaves as shorts. We are mentioning about using the natural products in the manufacture of textiles. This is a technological advancement where the textile industry is convincingly led to use herbal colours and textures. In other words, the move is to make the industry skip synthetic colours and fabrics. This new concept has come to be called ‘Ayurvedic textiles’. PROLOGUE - AYURVEDA Ayurveda, the ancient medical science of India, is accepted as the oldest scientific medical system; with a long record of clinical experience .It is presently in daily use by millions of people world over. The word "Ayurveda" is a tatpurusha compound of the word āyus meaning "life" or "life principle", and the word veda, which refers to a system of "knowledge". Thus "Ayurveda" roughly translates as the "knowledge of life". It is not merely a doctrine of medical treatment, but a way of healthy long life. Ayurveda teaches us how to maintain and protect health, how to cure diseases and how to promote longevity. Ayurveda treats man as a whole - which is a combination of body, mind and soul. Ayurved works by balancing the three doshas–(Tridosha). Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which govern the internal and external health of the body.
