Autocracy or Democracy – Which Should Be Prevailed? From the beginnings of the times, from ancient civilizations dated as back as 2000 B.C.E., the world had been based upon political systems and philosophies of governments. A country’s philosophy of government determines the economic system and the amount of rights that people have within that country’s borders. Nowadays a great majority of people debate what system of government would be better for the country to prosper – autocracy or democracy. Both types of governing have their advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, democracy has always shown to be the model for successful and long-living nations. The vast majority of the developed world is democratic in nature. Firstly, in a democratic country people have a chance to participate in choosing their leader and the main principles of the governmental policy using their freedoms. Autocracy doesn’t give such an opportunity; on the contrary, a dictator can take away any rights at any time without notice and do irreversible damage to the country with his military strength, like in Libya. Secondly, democracy teaches tolerance that means to perceive an opposite point of view even if you do not share it. On the contrary, autocracy is intolerant to different opinions; everyone who does not support the position of the government is automatically an “enemy of the nation”, as it was in the USSR. Thirdly, in a democratic society the principle of serving public interest is achieved by a constant control of the citizens via freedom of speech and mass media. Autocracy as a rule serves itself as it is not subordinate to the nation, and it appears to be the reason for the depraving of a government and the decline of a country. On the other hand, there are to faces to everything and it should be taken into consideration while praising one system and criticizing another
