Autism : Researchers still aren’t sure what causes it. Recently more children are being diagnosed with diverse types of mental diseases. Indeed, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, were calculated in two to six per 1000 births in 2003 with autism spectrum disorder (ASDs). While the condition is not new, scientists and doctors are unsure of its exact cause of autism. According to the author Monique Laberge, Ph.D., “ ASDs is a Neuro - developmental disorder with a variety of symptoms defined by deficits in social interaction, communication, and empathy accompanied by unusual repetitive behaviors, which appear during a child is three years old and continue throughout life” (213). The Autism Society of America (ASA) warns that the number of children suspected of having ASDs has increased drastically over the last few years which had been based in statistics on the nationwide. Moreover, Department of Education and other governmental agencies, the ASA estimates that the disorder is growing at a rate of 10 to 17 percent per year which could lead to 4 million Americans being affected by autism between 2005 and 2015 (Laberge 213). Consequently, there have made several studies about what is the cause of autism, and researchers still are not sure what causes it. Although currently substantial studies established that autism is genetic. First of all, opponents who believe that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not genetic, point out that environmental factor plays a large role causing autism. In the article, “Autism – an Environmental Health issue After all?” Rebecca Berg, a writer at National Environmental Health Association claims “While the evidence still point to a genetic component, an apparent increase in the incidence of ASDs has prompted some researchers to look again at the possibility of environmental influences on the disease”.
