The disorder covers a large spectrum of symptoms, skills, and levels of impairment. It ranges in severity from a handicap that somewhat limits an otherwise normal life to a devastating disability that may require institutional care. Nature of Autism Children with autism have trouble communicating. They have trouble understanding what other people think and feel. This makes it very hard for them to express themselves either with words or through gestures, facial expressions, and touch.
ADHD is one of the most common childhood disorders and can carry on through adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behaviour and hyperactivity. Scientists are not sure what causes ADHD, but many studies suggest that genes are a factor. In addition to genetics, researchers are looking at possible environmental factors, and are studying how brain injuries, nutrition, and the social environment might cause ADHD. Children who have suffered a brain injury may show some behaviour similar to those of ADHD.
What I will be informing you about Autism is causes and risk factors, Symptoms as well as signs and tests, and finally Treatment for this disorder. VI. This disorder doesn’t just affect the person that has it, but his or her family also. Many families struggle to understand what causes this disorder and how they can treat their son or daughter to his or her needs. The situation varies from child to child, as autism isn’t the same in everyone.
Over Diagnosing Autism in American Children Autism is defined by the Autism Society of America (ASA) as a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. While once rare autism has reached epidemic proportion in the United States. The increase cannot be attributed to changes in diagnostic criteria which have actually become more restrictive or be linked to childhood
These changes may not always be permanent dependant on the ABI (Acquired Brain Injury) but most often do cause substantial alterations in the person’s character and physical abilities. ABI's are very complex and no two persons can expect to have the same difficulties, although some of the changes will be similar they are rarely the same. 1.2 Describe possible causes of acquired brain injury. There are many causes of an ABI. Traumatic Brain injury is caused by physical traumas, for example an accident, neurosurgery, head injury or even an assault.
University of Phoenix Material Appendix F Autism and Mental Retardation Respond to the following: 1. List the primary features of autism. Autism affects a person’s ability to communicate as well as how they interact and socialize with others. The 4 main categories of symptoms are social, language, behavioral and medical. A person with mild form of autism can live on their own and function normally, while more severe cases a person can be non-verbal and function on a limited basis.
This can be mild or severe, one child might just hear sounds like blah blah blah and another may be able to hear all the information but just not make sense of it. * Describe other conditions that may be associated with the autistic spectrum. There are certain conditions that seem to be linked to people on the autistic spectrum. Some of them may not experience any but others may experience one or more, these are; -Anxiety disorders this is the secondly most common diagnosed disorder amongst children with ASD. Symptoms are affected by age, level of cognitive functioning and degree of social impairment.
Case Studies in Abnormal Disorder Francine Morgan PSY 410 January 15, 2012 Professor Eric Niler The brain abnormalities found in autistic individuals are thought to be based on genetics. Genetic and environmental plays a big part in the cause of autism. It seem that environmental factor might interact with genetic susceptibility during vulnerable periods of development (Lawler, Croen, Grether, & Van de Water, 2004, p.292-302). Although they are data that support a genetic cause, they also suggested that autism is not solely genetically based because 40% of individual who are identical twins do not share the disorder. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (2005), a family with a child with autism has a much higher than usual
Cara Blackwell Biopsychology Dr. Christian -Brougham September 9, 2013 Mirror Neurons and Autism Autistic disorders covers a wide range of dysfunction that mirror neurons could alleviate. Autism is a developmental disorder that effect how a person interacts with others, from social ineptitude to lack of an emotional response in a socially acceptable way. This is believed to stem form a massive neural impairment and is pervasive; unwanted and effects the patient physically. The cause of autism has yet to be identified but we know that “The inheritability of autistic disorder is estimated to be approximately 90 percent, with genetic abnormalities suspected to exist on chromosomes 7, 2 and 15.” and it is
Summary Autism Spectrum disorder is a syndrome with a wide diagnosis. The main features of ASD include lack of social communication, repetitive behaviors and limited interests. Autistic disorder, Asperger disorder, intergrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder all fall under ASD. ASD is effecting more than 1% of the population and there is a dramatic increase in recognition is creating huge demand on health care for accurate diagnosis. In 2008, it was stated that 1 in every 88 children had some form of autism with it being more common in boys, even though the reason is unknown.
